Inside the AIDS Fight: Memoir of an Epidemiologist at the Pandemic Front Lines
- Kent
Join the College of Public Health for a presentation about "Inside the AIDS Fight: Memoir of an Epidemiologist at the Pandemic Front Lines," with Harry W. Haverkos, M.D., physician with expertise in internal medicine and infectious diseases and author of the eponymous book.
Dr. Haverkos first encountered an AIDS patient in 1980, and by 1983, he challenged the prevailing belief that HIV alone caused AIDS, highlighting additional contributing factors. Through his groundbreaking work with the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Haverkos helped shape key prevention strategies that significantly impacted the course of the epidemic. His research not only advanced medical understanding but also influenced public health policy, legal frameworks, and patient advocacy.
Dr. Haverkos established a public health scholarship in memory of his late wife, Lynne M. Janecek, a proud member of the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ University Class of 1973, who double-majored in Biology and Chemistry. Lynne was deeply engaged in the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ community, both inside and outside the classroom. She was guided by a genuine concern for the well-being of others, a spirit that defined her life and work. Her legacy at 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ—and beyond—endures in all who were fortunate to know her, and it will continue to inspire and support future generations of KSU students through this scholarship.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Haverkos, moderated by Tara Smith, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology in the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ University College of Public Health.
